Testing Times:The Importance of Frequent Smoke Alarm Checks

As Autumn and Winter fully set in, our minds often turn to thoughts of fireworks, crisp weather and the inevitable build-up to Christmas. Unfortunately, the changing seasons also mean we get less daylight to enjoy.

To make the most of the dwindling daylight, homes and businesses across the UK put their clocks back by an hour on the last Sunday of October, which is the 30th this year. While this action has become a habit for many, it was also suggested by a recent government campaign as being the the perfect time to check that your smoke alarms are in working order.

However, due to the large gaps in between tests (7 months in the case of the time between clocks being put forward in March and back again in October) building owners and tenants alike are now being called upon to test their smoke alarms every month.

In the event of a fire, a working smoke alarm can alert a building’s occupants, giving them valuable time to escape. In fact, Government figures state that you’re four times more likely to die in a fire if your smoke alarm isn’t working, so there’s really no excuse not to take a minute to test yours.

We hope that everybody will take that little bit of extra time to check their alarms this month, and every month, making homes and businesses safer for everyone.
