Given the wide range of smoke ventilation systems available – from simple natural systems to more complex but efficient mechanical systems – it may seem difficult at first to identify which is the right fit for your project.
The type of smoke venting system that you require is determined by several factors, however the purpose of a well-designed smoke ventilation system is always the same; protecting escape routes such as corridors and staircases to allow occupants to escape while providing access for the fire service.

The Fire and Rescue Services (FRS) in England attended 161,770 fires from April 2016 to March 2017. Worryingly, it was found that smoke alarms had not been fitted in 27% of dwelling fires. The statistics also revealed that in 42% of all residential fire-related fatalities, a smoke alarm was fitted but it failed to operate or did not alert the occupants to the fire.

Approved Document B (ADB) states that unprotected parts of a building’s escape route should be limited to ensure that those inside do not have to travel excessive distances when exposed to the immediate danger of fire and smoke. Here, we look at the options that Be Safe Direct can provide to ensure compliance with ADB.
